Pat Robertson’s blaming Lawrence v Texas on the liberal court justices, even though a conservative justice put forth the majority opinion, with a broader backup statement by yet another conservative peer. Look at the text of his Operation Supreme Court Freedom and then be sure to catch him in interview on the subject. Basically, he’s appropriating history, taking it out of context and corrupting its intent to support his cause — the same approach the fundie right uses in interpreting religious texts. (I hope the Today show runs a summary article of its interview with him, inlcuding the constitutional expert who pointed out all the foibles of Robertson’s arguments.)
Between this and the Washington Times’ apoplexic reaction, it won’t be long before we’ll be the laughing stock of the civilized world. Hell, even Argentina is doing better with gays rights than we are. Frankly, I hope we do become the idiots of the world. The pressure might help.
That said, when I saw 365Gay.com’s headlines on all this, I laughed but then realized this kind of irreverence is exactly the kind of response I needed. It also put me in something of an irreverent mood and with that in mind, here’s the gay stuff I patronized in the last twelve hours:
- Not that I’m the hair-band type, but I noticed that Judas Priest is re-forming (although reforming might work, too) with its former lead coming back into the fold. Read Gay.com on my PDA as well.
- Wondered why a San Francisco paper is only just noticing FtMs and the cultural shift they present in the lesbian world. It’s been newsworthy here on the east coast for quite some time. But then I read the article and realized that enough time has passed to provide a broad perspective piece on the topic.
- Spent some time taking in Fairy Butch’s (love that name!) advice on sizing up dildos.
- Watched Bravo last night to catch the Fab 5 in action. That they mentioned IML in the first two minutes of the show made for a “be still my heart” moment. Personally, I want to see a Queer Eye/Today show wedding crossover. And I don’t want to be voting for straight couples either.
Now that, I’ll pray for. But first, I’ll pray in opposition of Pat Robertson.
