the New York Times is putting the news story of the Penthouse Boutique and the town of Milford forth for mass consumption. Locally, the story is only seeing coverage in shoreline newspapers near Milford. Not that its opening wasn’t pandemonium of a sort, not that the town didn’t do its best to aim nuisance actions at the boutique, not that Milford has finally gotten up off its ass and passed restrictive but within-legal-bounds ordinances to address the problem. But Penthouse Boutique shouldn’t have been singled out when it’s likely the most above-board of all the Milford adult businesses in town.
As I said a couple of weeks ago when this story was big news around here, once the flurry of furry dies down, it’ll be suburban shoppers looking for spice. I know because I see them all the time when I shop the adult businesses up here in northern Connecticut.
Back then, before other news and topics diverted my attention, I actually did a news search to see what kind of attention the licensing of the Penthouse name into a boutique was drawing. The range of interest in trade and business-to-business news was pretty interesting. Where it’s no surprise that it made a splash within the adult industry and among bible thumpers, it also made the business stream — about as mainstream as it gets — and even the fashion industry trade stream. And that was two weeks ago. I wonder what’s happening on the news wires, post NYT.

One thing’s for sure: California’s recall election sure is going to be colorful, what with porn star Mary Carey, pornographer Larry Flynt, and Hollywood billboard queen Angelyne entering the race. (Note: Angelyne’s still at it in Futurama, you know.) Amazingly enough, Flynt’s making sense. I may not like everything he’s done as a pornographer, but I sure do like his crusty anti-establishmentarianism. It’s refreshing in this day and age.
P.S. I better keep my email filter handy. I gonna need it for linking to a fundie site. Pray for me.
