for queer friends, family, and loved ones. That one state court has determined that equality under the law extends to them is one momentus step in the right direction. However, before we all start celebrating, don’t discount how determined conservative forces will be in backlashing this decision across the country and perhaps into the presidential election arena as well. Do yourself a favor, get a day pass to Salon and read up. Several articles there will show you what I mean. Me, I’m determined not to support the Republican party if they choose to flamewar this issue. I’ll support local, state, and presidential hopefuls who support equal access for all. And I think it’s time I wrote to my own governor and expressed my views since he’s already claiming he’ll veto any gay marriage legislation. (You’d think he’d think twice. Between wide-spread state support for gay marriage and the fact that members of his own administration have earned corruption convictions and jail time that he’d heed public opinion. Oops! Rant!)
BTW, I’m not throwing a barb at Andrew Sullivan. He’s voicing some of the most cogent arguments for gay marriage out there and I’m glad he’s enjoying the liberating thrill of the moment. Go read what he has to say. I’m simply baced for the backlash right now and I greatly doubt that conservative forces won’t force the White House’s hand. I doubt President Bush is going to rise to the civil rights occasion and be another Kennedy or (Heaven forbid!) Johnson.
OK, that’s getting too close to a rant once again. I did promise you lighter fare this week, didn’t I? I’ve got the links lined up, ready to go. Next time, I promise.
