Author/pornographer John Preston passed away. A one-time Advocate editor and creator of the uber-leather master Mr. Benson, Preston left us before protease inhibitors rendered HIV a chronic condition. His collection of essays, My Life as a Pornographer and Other Indecent Acts, was pretty seminal to my interest in writing pornography.* He was among those authors whose works were routinely suppressed in Canada and he had planned to testify in the Little Sisters court case. Unfortunately, time ran out before he could do so. His papers and letters are archived at Brown University..)
Because his death occurred before the web exploded into widespread use, it’s difficult to memorialize him with links. Fortunately, persistent digging brought up this essay, this interview, and this little ditty by Preston himself. Remember him, today, won’t you?
* Good karmic loop: Friend Dan Lyke penned the review.
