Whoa! Did you see that coming?

I figured New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey’s resignation would have everything to do with the scandals surrounding his donors, but imagine my radar going up when I heard him say, “From my early days in school, until the present day, I acknowledged some feelings, a certain sense that separated me from others.” My first reaction? “Oh my God! Is he coming out?” I couldn’t believe I was watching such a public moment, understanding what was unfolding before my eyes. Ultimately, I found it heartening to see someone be so strong and forward about it.

I have mixed feelings about the situation. First, I know little about his administration and leadership, so I must leave those issues to New Jersey folks — just as they probably had to leave Connecticut’s Rowland scandal to us. But McGreevey’s situation does show the vulnerability of living life in the closet. You’re always at risk for manipulation. It also shows one weakness of coming out, too. Had he been straight, I doubt McGreevey would’ve had to resign over an extramarital affair. However, I admire him for admitting he’s a gay American.

Now we’ll have to wait and see whether he and his wife choose a bisexual resolution. That, too, would be honorable, provided they aren’t creating another closet of a different sorts (i.e., hiding from their individual sexual needs for the sake of propriety).

To those 4,000-plus Californians and their allies: Thought it hurts to the quick, don’t let today’s ruling deter you. Time to seek the same ruling that Washington state received. And know that many of us still honor your marital commitment.
