I can’t ignore the whole Mary Cheney explosion. Was it a low blow by Kerry? No. It was a completely clumsy one. Cheney’s out. When you’re out, you’re out and you better have the cahones to expect the rest of the world to do with it what they will. But, of course, it’s not Mary we’re really talking about. It’s her parents and apparently they don’t have the cahones to handle what comes with being out.

However, don’t take my word for it. Read Andrew, John, Mike, BladeBlog, and this Salon commentary.

Frankly, the Bush/Cheney campaign have no idea how hot the GLBT community has simmered over its treatment of gay issues — and even of Mary Cheney herself. Dad’s one compassionate moment aside, where was she when the Cheney family gathered on stage at the Republican convention? You tell me. And then tell me if that’s how inclusion should be defined.

(And just how did the Cheneys themselves respond to Alan Keyes “selfish hedonist” comment? Oh yeah! They didn’t!)

So the lid’s blowing off the pot among queer bloggers. Take notice, Republicans, because Kerry isn’t going to lose points with us over his clumsy moment. He’s not the one who’s going to get the GLBT backlash. It’s two parents who underestimate how tired many of us are at being treated selectively and like second-class citizens.

Keep this in mind: If Kerry or Edwards had a queer kid, do you think the Republican political machine would’ve been anywhere as kind as Kerry attempted to be? After all, democrats didn’t produced this.

It remains to be seen if either side will further exploit this incident. I will say this, though: If the Cheneys don’t let it drop — and drop quickly — then as far as I’m concerned, they’re exploiting the matter for political gain. Which will only solidify my intention to vote a straight democratic ticket. (Which is as straight as I get, folks.)
