I find it, for lack of a better word, amusing that…
on January 3rd, 2005 at 6:00 pmCanadians not only get a bounty of sex-themed programming on their digital cable systems, but are pretty matter-of-fact about it. Can you imagine anyone saying the following without getting lambasted by the American right:
Canadians cherish their freedom to watch mature sexual programming. It’s now a normal part of the TV landscape. It’s an evolution of TV going hand-in-hand with people’s tastes and this country’s social values.
Lucky, admirable dogs says I. They have the people’s right; we get broha-ha’s over Janet Jackson’s breast. Thank God we have quasi-manifestos like that which Lara Riscol wrote for Alternet.
(She mentions purity politics. Remember that label. I think I’ll be using it a lot here this next year.)
On the bright side, Dan pointed to this exquisite article about Carol Queen and the Center for Sex and Society’s search for vintage pornography. The whole thing gives me a biblio/ephemera hard-on. Yummy.
Finally, to you, dear readers, a Happy New Year. I hope health and prosperity visit each of you this year. Be sure to send some samples of things illegal, OK? For those of you who emailed me over the holidays, I’ll answer soon. And although this entry’s a tad short, I’ll be back with more links and tales shortly. My holiday fade-out is now officially over — LOL!
