“No rational purpose exists for limiting marriage in this state to opposite-sex partners.”
From Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer. And because he’s a Catholic, Republican-appointed justice, you can’t easily make the activist judge label stick. (Not that that’ll stop opponents from trying.) I’m pleased he cited the state Supreme Court’s 1948 decision striking down California’s law against interracial marriage as precedent. (Not that that’ll give the many anti-gay forces any cause to pause.) I’m also encouraged that Ahnuld is pleased to have the courts decide the matter and says he won’t jump on any amendment bandwagon. (Not that that’ll stop the bandwagon from rolling.) Hey, a glimmer of hope: Republican moderation isn’t yet extinct. I hope it pulls an American Eagle comeback.
Of course, civil equality isn’t going to be an easy battle. California fundies will most certainly organize their opposition. Even here in Connecticut, a backlash is forming. Guess I better make sure my local state rep remembers our conversation last autumn.
