Huh. Whaddaya know! Guess what came and went?
on August 11th, 2005 at 6:00 pmPursed Lips’ sixth anniversary. Yes, six years ago on August 9th, I made my first blog entry. Back then, the blogosphere was an encampment, its human race just a couple of hundred strong. Now look at it — millions of people blog. And more than a few blog about sex. Whether journaling their personal escapades or opining about sex and culturre or engaging outright porn blogging, we’re all essentially doing the same thing. We’re laying claim to the same enthusiasm. Bully for us!
We’ve reached a critical mass, but have yet to experience a mass, mainstream tipping point. The media doesn’t point to us when they talk up blogs in the press. It’s either all politics or all diarists and only sometimes about sexbloggers. Yes, there’s notable exceptions like Belle de Jour’s anonymous rise to fame, Violet Blue’s podcast getting notice, Washingtonienne’s not-too-distant notoriety, even, of course the ubiquitous Fleshbot, perhaps the only one of us who’ve earned obligatory sexblog mention. But maybe there’s somethin in waiting for our tipping point to come. I look forward to seeing how it’ll play out.
And I hope we become a vocal entity in our culture war. Even if, as a sexblogger, you’re far from political, should our courts become as conservative as our government, we could become at risk for, if not censorship, censureship. Your presence and your voice could make you a target of forces who would like nothing better than see us all restricted into oblivion.
So be sure to celebrate your freedom to blog about sex or read about sex. Visit your favorite sexblogs often. Blog often and fearlessly. Be a presence. And celebrate, for Pete’s sake!
