That makes me smile and gives me hope. There, in a slide show of U.S. soldiers somberly displaying their talismans, squatted a smiling young man holding a plastic bag. He’s the only soldier smiling among his sober peers. Why? Because that bag contains a pair of his wife’s panties. That’s so cool. And it made me smile too.

What a keepsake. It’s a reminder intimacy had and promises more upon return. It playfully says “I love you bravely enough to remind you that I’m hot for you.” It says “I want you and I want you to want me, too. Now and forever.”

Wow. Incredible.

Although I respect the other soldiers more character talismans — and certainly understand the deep-seated need for them, seeing a man cherishing a pair of panties gave me a boost of playful hope I have too rarely felt during the Iraqi debacle. Thank you, Corporal Compton, for both your pose and the wonderful story behind your wife’s panties. I needed that, big time. Thanks.
