Sukebe, if I haven’t yet explained it, is the kind and gentle way of calling someone a pervert in Japanese. I understand that it literally means “sex fiend” and it’s the playful,trash-talking way to call a friend or lover a pervert. By contrast, hentai — the word we American have come to associate with pornographic comics and animation — means you’re a pathological deviant. It’s a far more serious term, one you might associate with imprisoned pedophiles or institutionally ill, crazy uncles.

I’m not about to suggest we replace hentai with sukebe — that’s simply too hard a repositioning to undertake. And it’s too akin to the “loving dominance” versus S/M argumentative differentiations of the 1990s. I, for one, don’t need to revisit that kind of discourse, however enlightening both sides of the argument might be.

Instead, I’d like to point out that you can conjure up a little kanji sukebe or yourself via Red Tengu. (I’m thinking postcards, journal, and spaghetti tank for myself.)

Hai!
