But the Red State Report guys have a rip-roaring take on the economy of scale, I can’t ignore it. Really, did any of us stop to consider what we could afford on Spitzer’s dime?
Humor aside, I was very impressed over the weekend to see Ben Stein editorialize about a very real concern behind the Eliot Spitzer incident: that a possible fishing expedition has negated the will of the voters. Generally, I don’t agree with Ben Stein on anything beyond living within your means and saving for retirement, but I agree with him on this matter. Government resources may have been used to snag an American citizen, not because he committed an act of terror or treason but because of his political profile and visibility.
And beyond the serious matter of negating the popular vote, I add that if individuals within the government can snoop against a powerful politic figure, then the law can be misused to intrude on average American lives.
The media and political pundits haven’t yet engaged in a discussion of this possibility in any substantive way and, sadly, I doubt that they will. Why? Because it’s too complex for the quick headlines that the public devours.
It’s always easier when it’s quick and dirty — just like your basic scandal.
